Gabby's World
Gabby’s World (Eskimeaux) has been Gabrielle Smith’s solo outlet since 2007. She’s a founding member of the Epoch, a Brooklyn-based music, film, and art collective that is affiliated with other experimental indie pop artists. Smith shares her talents with a multitude of other projects, including the inimitable Frankie Cosmos, and Gabby’s World’s live band consists of members of Sharpless, Told Slant, and Bellows.
Since turning away from electronic noise records in 2011, Gabby’s World has settled on ethereal, lo-fi folk-pop. It’s folk in the storytelling sense, but is performed and written with rock instrumentation. What makes Smith especially unique is her ability to maintain an intimate focus on collective experience. Not every line is about her, but every line feels like it’s written about something or someone close to her. This is especially prominent on newest release, “O.K.,” which is made up of previously-recorded tracks that are rearranged and refined. It’s a dense and emotionally stirring album that showcases Smith’s subtle vocal texture and off-kilter arrangements. Gabrielle Smith is still relatively young, but has a remarkable ability to glean personal experiences and mold them into riveting songs. It’s an exhilarating time for the Epoch and especially for Gabby’s World.
